Meet The Artist

Who

Azra Sheik Amod is a professional henna/mehndi artist specializing in contemporary and traditional designs. When she was younger, what had begun as a hobby, had bloomed into a full-time fascination and side business for her. The pursuit of this enthusiasm led to the creation of the well-known Western Cape brand "Arabesque Henna."

Her

" Henna has been a passion for me from a very young age. I used to love watching brides get their henna done at their mehndi night and beg my parents to have mine done too. In my teen years, I started doodling around with henna cones making strokes and flowers on my little sister and myself. My mom persisted that i had a talent that people will love, and now many years later, it has turned into a rewarding business."

The Art

From the late Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean, young women's bodies have been decorated with henna as a part of social and festival celebrations. The Night of the Henna, today observed throughout the entire middle east, appears to have originated from this early association between young women and henna.

In regions where henna naturally grows, most religious groups, including Jews, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and Zoroastrians, celebrated the Night of the Henna by decorating the bride and frequently the groom with henna.

Henna was used for luck, joy, and beauty and was thought to have Barakah ("blessings"). In order to express their greatest delight and good fortune desires. Brides often had the most henna and the most intricate designs.

Henna is still utilized today in all kinds of body art and coloring techniques as well as in traditional notions from all over the world.

Aftercare

Instant Henna

Once dry, peel off and avoid water or lotions for the first 12 hours. The henna will stain instantly and last 5 -10 days with minimal contact with liquids.

Natural Henna

Hands should be freshly washed and free from oils or lotions before application. Once partially dry, pat down with lemon-sugar emulsion, wrap with cling or stocking and keep on overnight (8-12 hours). Thereafter, scrape henna off with butter knife and olive oil. Rub with Vicks Vapor Rub and avoid water for 24 hours. True colour will only be visible 3 days after application and will last 1 - 2 weeks with minimal contact with liquids.
